Critical Thinking Essay #4

Legalising Euthanasia

Should people cheated death instead of suffering? Euthanasia is the term of terminating a very sick person in order to relieve them from suffering. At the same time, euthanasia can be done under request of the person suffering, yet, there are times when the person who suffers couldn’t make the request for examples, people in coma and paralysed the decision to do euthanasia is made by the relatives, the medics, or other instances. Moreover, euthanasia is mostly done to people who suffer from incurable sickness, and most people would think that euthanasia is mostly done to the people who suffered pain awfully, however, the statistics from USA and Netherlands shows that “less than a third of request for euthanasia were because of severe pain.” In other words, psychological factors such as depression, feeling a burden, and dislike of being dependent are the cause that makes people to think of euthanasia. For this reason, there are some countries that don’t support the act of euthanasia because it is against the religion, it is not humanist, and it against the law because euthanasia also called suicide or kill. Nonetheless, the ethical problems of euthanasia and the facts that supports euthanasia will shows why euthanasia should be legalise.

Euthanasia should be legalised because of several morality or ethical reasons. In general, those civilised people argued that the act of euthanasia or suicide should not be a crime because they believe that everyone has the rights of their own bodies and mind which is means that they have the rights to make their own decision to live or to die. Moreover, they believe that forcing people to continue living and suffering is immoral. In fact, the act of euthanasia is illegal in most of the countries including the Britain. According to the 1961 Suicide Act, euthanasia is consider a crime in Britain, and the punishment is 14 years of imprisonment, to assist, aid or counsel somebody to taking their own life. And besides, the Times (24 January 2007) stated that, according to the British Social Attitudes survey in 2007, “80% of the public said that they wanted the law changed to give terminally ill patients the right to die with a doctor’s help.” And at the same time, in the same survey, it stated, “45% supported giving patients of non-terminal illnesses the option of euthanasia. And a majority opposed to relatives being involved in patient’s death.” As the matter of facts that forcing people to continue living and suffering is immoral and against human rights, the act of euthanasia should be allowed and legalised.

Furthermore, euthanasia should be allowed and legalise because of the logical facts of the act of euthanasia. First of all, as it mentioned in the paragraph above, people have the rights to control their own bodies, mind, and life. As it was stated in The Independent (March, 2002), “in cases where there are no dependants who might exert pressure way or the other, the right of the individual to choose should be paramount. So long as the patient is lucid, and his or her intent is clear beyond doubt, here need be no further question.” Second of all, death is a private matters, and if it is not harmful to others the state and other people have no right to interfere. As an example, if an action promotes the best interest of everyone concerned and violates no one’s rights then that action is morally acceptable, and which is means, euthanasia is morally acceptable because euthanasia promotes the best interests of everyone involved and it violae’s no one’s rights. And last but not least, euthanasia could be necessary for the fair distribution of health resources. For instance, in some countries, there is a lack of health resources and sometimes some people who are ill of sickness that can be cured can’t get the fast access and treatment because all the equipments are being use to the person whom the sickness can’t be cured. And thus, by allowing some people to commit euthanasia help people who are in needs and want to stay alive from the valuable resources. Therefore, the act of euthanasia shouldn’t be banned and illegal because this act affects the society positively and people live and death is their own rights to choose.

To conclude, as a human being, people would prefer end their own life in dignity and painless rather than suffering and waiting until the time to come. At the same time, killing people under request or because of helping people to relieve their suffering does not count as crime, because they do something bad for good. Therefore, euthanasia should be legalise because it doesn’t affects other people, it does not against human rights, and it is an individual meters to make their own decisions.

Critical Thinking Essay #3

Pros and Cons of Capital Punishment

Is Death the way to solve problems? As stated by the Britannica Encyclopedia, capital punishment is also called the death penalty which is means an execution of a criminal sentenced to death after a conviction by a court of law of a criminal offense. However, some people commited crime because they have resons such as self-defense and these people will need to be consider again before just putting them into death penalty. Besides, there always have the pros and cons of this capital punishment.

To strat with, there are several pros of doing capital punishment. First of all, prison is the place to rehabilitate convicts who will eventually leave prisons. Logically, people who are rehabilitating in prison are less likely going to repeat their crimes and sentenced in prison again, yet, for people who are not supposed to be release from the prison alive, death penalty will be the best way to execute them. Second of all, capital punishment is truly cost effective to the government. Lucidly, the cost of imprisoning a person for his or her whole life is lots more expensive then just executing the same person in a time. Third of all or lastly, capital punushment will make the security of the public to be more assured. For example, normally, people who are sentenced to capital punishment are people who commited in a big crime and they usually are a violent individuals. And these people might harm the prison’s guard or other prisoners. At the same time, they might ran away and it harmfull to the general public as well. Therefore, by giving capital punishment to a violent individual will make the society to become more secure, and subsequently it will help to safe lots of money compared to imprisoning criminals for ther whole life.

On the other hand, there are quite a few cons to do the capital punishment. Firstly, capital punishment is not humane because killing a person is not humane. Even though the criminal is not humane, but everyone’s beliefs and education had taught them about what is humane and what’s right to do and what’s wrong to do. Secondly, Some people belief that the death penalty violates the human rights. They believe that killing them or death is the violation of the person’s rights to live. Lastly, some people believe that killing and capital punishment is playing God. Some people believe that all death has to be natural and murder is one part of a nature death. Thus, the cons of doing the capital punishment will includes morality and beliefs of individuals because some people believe that death penalty is not humane, it against human rights to live, and it’s changing the natural death or also called playing with God’s plan.

In conclusion, there are always being the pros and cons of the capital punishment because kiling is against the morality of human and people knows that two wrong do not make a right. In contrast, keeping a criminal will affect the society’ssecurity as well. In my opnion, convicting person to the death penalty may need to stated clear information of the person criminal records. At the same time, before conviting a person, the court will have to look for reasons and backgrounds of the criminal and reconsider wether execution is needed or not. Thus, clear and solid evidence is the best way to tell wether a person need to be executed or not becase without strong evidence and clear reasons killing a person is still consider a crime and it againts the human rights.

Critical Thinking Essay #2

Causes of Stress in Today’s Urban Society

Nowadays, there are lots of people who live in the urban area are stressed of having lots of pressure. According to the American Institute of Stress, “80% of workers feel stress on the job and nearly half say they need help in learning how to manage stress.” But before we get further, stress is a normal physical responds that came from something that makes people feel threatened or upset people’s balance in some ways. For instance, when people are being threatened, their body will automatically responds to stress. At the same time, most people are stress because of their major life events, working pressure, and peer pressure.

First of all, individual’s major life events are one of the main causes of stress. As stated by psychiatrist Drs Thomas Holmes and Richard Rahe death of family members is the hardest and stressful moments for an individuals. In fact, everyone always gets their greatest pain when they lost their love ones and this pain will bring them lots of pressure that causes stress. Moreover, people get stress because of their unpleasant past. For example, people who experienced a harsh childhood time and people who had been abused. For some people they can just keep moving on, however, there are lots of people who are being haunted by their painful memories and they are stress because the events in their life. Subsequently, every individual will always have experienced bad thing, but some people, they can never forget their bad memories because it leaves or changed something on them and gave them a great stressful times in their life. As an example, people who experienced a car accident and loose their arms or legs, they will never forget the accident that happened to them and change their whole life which bring them lots of mental pain and putting their life in stress. Therefore, death, unpleasant past, and bad experiences that leave something on individuals are major life events that can cause people in great pain mentally and puts them in stress.

Furthermore, the second main factor of people to get stress is the pressure of their work or jobs. Some people maybe love their jobs, easy, and highly paid jobs, however, these people can still get stress because of commuting. Which is means that they have to travel a long distance from home to work place. For example, people who work as flight attendants, they get a high salary with an easy job but they don’t really have a time to spend with their family and this giving them lots of pressure and it may put them to the stress level. Especially for married people with children. At the same time, pressure and stress that is very common to most people is job insecurity. This kind of pressure and stress are mostly happens to salesmen or women because they don’t have a stable salary and there are lots of competition between salesmen and women. And moreover if their rates of sales are low they will be fired and their salary are depends on how much properties they sell. Furthermore, talking about salary, this is the most common pressure that most people have in their job, which is stress because of low paying job. As matters of fact that there are many people are unemployed and in today’s culture everyone is knowledgeable and experienced, people who are new or weaker can’t find proper job even though they have the same level of education as others. And because of this, there are lots of people suffered from the pressure that their jobs are lowly paid and married people will suffer the most because they don’t have enough money for their family's fund or the worse case is that they can’t pay their mortgage and they will become homeless. Thus, pressure and high level of stress is most commonly come from the work or job pressure which included, the stress of commuting, job insecurity, and low paying jobs.

Besides major life events and work pressure, one of the biggest causes of stress in today’s society is peer pressure. As a human being, people always want to fit in with the groups and they don’t want to be left out of the society. Moreover, not just teenagers get influenced by their peers, yet adults do so. For adults, the most common peer pressure that they can get is the pressure of job dissatisfaction. For example, as adults people will show what they have and show who is better. And for some people they has to be richer or better than other people to fit in the group so they will have lots of pressure and put them self to stress because of their dissatisfaction of their jobs and salary. Other than jobs dissatisfaction, people are most likely pressured by their peers because of their role and status in the work place. For instance, some people may have friends that are all in a high status, and it makes them to believe that if they have power and status, others will respect them and fit into the group. These people will get into lots of pressure and stress because they have to work really hard to get higher role or higher status as their friends had. Furthermore, peer pressure can come from the social life that people committed in. As an example, in a work place there always have weekend party or any other party that contributes only the employees and there are some people who doesn’t like to go for party and by not going to the party they will be left out from other co-workers and this peer pressure can leads to stress. Hence, peer pressure may leads to a great pressure that leads to stress for some people.

In conclusion, stress can happen to an individuals in many ways such as, major life events like death and bad memories of their past. And then, stress because of the pressure in work and jobs such as low paying jobs, job insecurity, and commuting fro their jobs. And lastly, is the stress that comes from peer pressure included job dissatisfaction, status and roles, and pressure of being left out. On the other hand, stress can leads to mental and physical illnesses. Therefore, people can’t suffer too much pressure all the time. As the words of Anne Frank, the survivors of the holocaust, “We all live with the objectives of being happy; our lives are all different and yet the same.” Anne Frank believes that in how much pressure she got, she wanted to get a good result, which is happiness. Subsequently, she also quoted that even though they lives is different and yet the same she meant that different, race, status, or power, yet everyone is the same.

Critical Thinking - Essay #1

Success

What make you successful? According to Anthony Robbins, an American motivational speaker, “the secret of success is learning how to use pain and pleasure instead of having pain and pleasure use you.” At the same time, some people believe that successful means that they have fulfilled all of the stages of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs by the mean that they have fulfilled their psychological needs, their safety, their sense of love or belongings, their self-esteem, and their self- actualization. However, people have different ways and beliefs to gain their success because every individual have their own definition of ‘needs’ and ‘wants’ that influence their nation of success. Nonetheless, most people fall into materialistic, escapist, and power categories to define the meaning of success.

Materialistic success is usually a result of media influence. Materialistic people always wanted to have a high status and luxury as much as possible. These days, media appear to praise and promote people who are rich and stand out because they have a great deal of money. For example, socialites such as Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashians, and Nicole Richie are being praise and becoming public figure because they have status and they have a great deal of money. At the same time, real public figure that have big influential to people likewise actresses, actors, singers, and models are now becoming materialistic. These figures being materialistic by living in all luxurious stuff such as, luxury cars, luxury fashion, and luxury houses. Afterwards, the media influence people becoming materialistic by using endorsement technique. Actresses are being endorsed in the advertisement by advertising luxury brand products, for example, Leonardo DiCaprio is an endorsement on Tag Heuer’s watches. Thus, day by day people becoming materialistic and believe in material success is the result of media influence.

Second of all, people who fell in the escapist category are different with people who believe in material success. People who fall into the escapist catagories believe in success that come fron the joy and fun and do a lot of new experience as much as possible. For example, people who believe in escapism success will do whatever they want tod o and gain as musch experience as they can as long as they are still living in this world. At the same time, the escapist are the dreamer they escape to the world of fantasy. Therefore, escapism is people’s beliefs in success that comes from experiences and joy. And these people believe that no man can live just by facing the relity of the world.

Furthermore, some people believe in success from the power. Success means success that come from the power that people have to control other people or some people belief that power menas that everyone will look up on them. These people who believe in power success normally they work in a place where there are lots of different positions. At the same time, these people normally work as the leader for example, a manager in a company. They like to work by controling other people as leader and people will respect them because of their position. As the words of a power success believer, Mark Hansen, “you must be on top of change or change will be o top of you.” This quote shows directly that this person is a powerfull person and he likes to control and take the lead of everything and this power means success for him. To sum up, success power is success that comes from the power of he person either t is in work place or outside. These believers are usually leaders or people with high position that people will pay respect to and get controlled by.

In conclusion, success is achievement from something desired, plenned, or attempted. Subsequently, people desired and planned a different way. Some people live for their fortune by having all the luxurious properties, which we called hem people beieve in material success. Meanwhile, there are some people who live to gain as much fun and experiences as their goals to becoming successful, and we call them as escapist, which means that they escape from the reality. Moreover, there are people whom determine success as gaining as much power as possible to control other people and respected by other people, and usually this people are leaders. Thus, people are different in the way they think, yet we still have something in common that we have our own motivation and goals to be successful.
